Boat logbook

A boat's logbook is an essential document for recording all the detailed information on navigation, such as geographical positions, headings and speeds, as well as weather conditions and crew members present.

It is a crucial document for tracking the routes taken by the boat in order to comply with maritime regulations, and to provide evidence in the event of an accident or inspection by the competent authorities.

It also helps to manage the crew by recording watches and activities performed, and contributes to the maintenance and optimisation of the vessel's performance by identifying trends or recurring problems. This document is the ship's logbook whenever a vessel sets out to sea.

What rules apply to the logbook?

The logbook is compulsory for all commercial vessels (NUC), fishermen, pleasure craft and passenger vessels. It is not compulsory for pleasure craft sailing within 6 miles of a shelter. According to Division 240, the logbook must contain "information relevant to the navigation and safety of the vessel".  The information required includes:

  • geographical positions: GPS coordinates, headings followed, speeds

  • weather conditions: temperatures and winds, sea state.

  • important events: departure and arrival times, stopovers, specific manoeuvres, incidents, maintenance operations where applicable

  • crew management: working and rest hours, watch assignments

  • controls and inspections: any intervention by the authorities or classification bodies

Once completed, the logbook must be kept for a period of 3 years after the last entry, even if there is a change of ownership.

How can I simplify keeping a logbook?

Today, it is difficult to simplify this management process, as it is essentially paper-based. The fact that it is virtually compulsory for all sailing boats makes it restrictive, as it requires precise information that can be tedious to enter. The form, whether electronic or paper, is not specified.

It is therefore possible to have an electronic logbook if the information entered meets the mandatory requirements of the traditional logbook. An electronic logbook can have a number of advantages, such as automatic weather information, GPS tracking of the boat, which precisely defines the navigation route, and speed information.

Without an electronic logbook, it is still possible to simplify management by setting up checklists, for example, or by properly training the crew to fill in and check all the information to be reported.

Automatic logbook

The latest feature to revolutionise your navigation: the automatic AIS logbook! No more paper and boring information to enter. We've developed the ideal solution for combining your logbook with your maintenance book.

Connected via your vessel's AIS, all you have to do is enter the essential information on your smartphone and set off to sea. Once you've finished sailing, you can add or change the information and keep a record of every trip the boat makes, including the exact routes taken!

We have designed the logbook according to the traditional existing model to ensure regulatory compliance in the event of an audit. Just one click and you'll find :

  • precise weather conditions for the navigation    reserve levels (fuel, fresh water, black water, etc.) and operating hours (engines and generators)

  • crew members on board

  • the number of passengers

  • stopovers, if any

  • complete sailing route

You can also save time by declaring a future task from the logbook, and anticipate your maintenance or repairs before you even arrive in port! Combine your new logbook with your maintenance book and simplify your life all in one place!
